Weekly Round-Up

Last week was short but productive!

It was so nice to sit down and chat with our families on Thursday and Friday. Thank you for being wonderful partners in your child’s education!

We have been very busy practicing for our Christmas concert!

The kindergarten concert will be on December 14 at 9:30 am.

Last week was “Bullying Awareness Week.” We called it “Kindness week.” We read stories about kindness, held kindness circles, wrote/drew about when we are kind and had a visit from Father David. We will continue with some explicit kindness teaching this week too.

We have been learning lots about addition. Dice and domino games have been wonderful tools to support our learning!

We have been working on rhyming. We brainstormed “at” and “it” family words.

Playing rhyming games at home, singing songs like Down By The Bay and reading rhyming stories are great ways to practice at home! Rhyming practice helps support writing and reading readiness!

Permission forms for a field trip were sent home on Thursday. Please complete both sides of the form and send in ASAP!

This week the PAT letter is Cc.

The sight word of the week is can.

Weekly Round-Up

We had a wonderful week of learning through play.

The arrival of snow made it extra exciting. There’s something magical about the season’s first snowfall!

We got very creative this week with recyclable materials. It all started by reading the book “Not a Box.” After reading it, we were inspired to turn plain ol’ boxes into other objects! This activity required a lot of problem solving, planning, creativity and team work. We also presented our creations to the office staff and our peers, which helps us develop our oral communication skills too!

We continued with our self regulation inquiry. We created playdough emojis, made feelings with loose parts and read some great read alouds.

We read the stories Chicka Chicka Boom Boom and Chicka Chicka One Two Three. We worked on a STEM activity which challenged us to build a coconut tree to balance letters. We also played an alphabet matching game too! We will continue with some extension activities next week too!

We participated in number talks each morning this week. During a number talk we present the children with a number. They tell us what they think of when they see the number. So many great ideas came up! We discover that a number is much more than the numeral! The SK friends enjoyed a write the room number activity and we have all been learning about adding this week too! Dominos are a great tool to use at home to support the concept of addition.

The letter of the week is Nn.

The sight word of the week is “new.”

We will also add no, not to the word wall too.

A reminder that initial observations go home Tuesday. This report will highlight how your child is adjusting to the Kindergarten program and some of your child’s strengths and next steps. Inside the report will be your interview time for Thursday or Friday. The interviews are only 10 min long. We are solid booked with back to back interviews so we will need to stick to the time. If they start running late it causes a real domino effect for those who have to get to another siblings teacher for a specific time too. If you require longer than 10 minutes we are happy to meet again anytime the next week before or after school. Thank you so much ahead of time for your support in this!

Have a great week!

Weekly Round-Up

Happy weekend! The cold weather surely seems upon us with today’s brisk wind!

A gentle reminder to please send your child with a hat, gloves or mittens, boots and a warm coat. Splash pants are also another great layer! We are outside for a good chunk of our day. We want to make sure our friends are warm!

This past week we continued to explore shapes. We learned about the trapezoid and more about the hexagon. We discovered that you can put certain shapes together to make a new shape too! We also made pictures out of shapes. Shape exploration is so important because as children start to identify shapes, they develop a beginning understanding of geometry.

Lots of building took place this week! Our STEM challenge was to build a bridge over water. It required lots of problem solving and trial and error!

We put out new Duplo Lego and train sets that everyone really enjoyed building with too!

We have also enjoyed board games, puzzles and outdoor digging this week!

We have been teaching the boys and girls lots about feelings and the Zones of Regulation. It has become a classroom inquiry where we are asking questions and exploring the answers together. The children are coming up with their own ideas and ways to explain “the Zones” and the way we can self regulate.

We learned lots this week about peace and Remembrance Day. We learned the significance of the poppy and what it means to be peacemakers. We attended a beautiful Remembrance Day ceremony in the gym on Friday too.

Remembrance Day is extra close to Mrs. Linse’s heart as her younger brother Kyle is a Master Corporal in the Canadian Armed Forces. He is posted to CFB Edmonton with the Lord Strathcona’s Horse (Royal Canadians), a tank regiment in the Canadian Armed Forces. He has been serving in the CAF now for almost 11 years. Mrs. Linse and her family miss him terribly but are so proud of the work he does!

This week our PAT letter is Pp. the sight word of the week is “put.”

Enjoy the rest of the weekend!
